33
34
Android Development Tools (ADT) is a plugin for the Eclipse IDE
35that is designed to give you a powerful, integrated environment in which
36to build Android applications.

37
38
ADT extends the capabilities of Eclipse to let you quickly set up new Android
39projects, create an application UI, add components based on the Android
40Framework API, debug your applications using the Android SDK tools, and even
41export signed (or unsigned) {@code .apk} files in order to distribute your application.

42
43
Developing in Eclipse with ADT is highly recommended and is the fastest way
44to get started. With the guided project setup it provides, as well as tools
45integration, custom XML editors, and debug ouput pane, ADT gives you an
46incredible boost in developing Android applications.

47
48
This document provides step-by-step instructions on how to download the ADT
49plugin and install it into your Eclipse development environment. Note that
50before you can install or use ADT, you must have compatible versions of both the
51Eclipse IDE and the Android SDK installed. For details, make sure to read <a
52href="#installing">Installing the ADT Plugin, below.

53
54
If you are already using ADT, this document also provides instructions on
55how to update ADT to the latest version or how to uninstall it, if necessary.
56

57
58
For information about the features provided by the ADT plugin, such as code
59editor features, SDK tool integration, and the graphical layout editor (for drag-and-drop layout
60editing), see the Android Developer Tools

156
157
Build system

158

159

160
Changed
default.properties
to
project.properties
and
161
build.properties
to
ant.properties
. ADT automatically
162 renames these files, if necessary, when you open a project in Eclipse.

163
Changed how library projects are built in Eclipse.

164
Changed output of
javac
from
bin/
to
bin/classes

165 in Eclipse.

166
Improved incremental builds so that resource compilation runs less frequently. Builds no
167 longer run when you edit strings or layouts (unless you add a new
id
) and no longer
168 run once for each library project.

169
Introduced a "PNG crunch cache" that only runs on modified PNG files, instead of
170 crunching all existing PNG files, all the time.

171
Modified resource compilation so it no longer happens for normal save operations. It only
172 happens when running or debugging (the build option that lets you disable the packaging
173 step, which was introduced in ADT 12, is now on by default.)

174

175
For a complete overview of the build system changes and what you need to do to support them,
176see the Android Tools Project

178

179
180
General improvements

181

182

183
184
185
Added a Welcome Wizard to help with the initial setup of the Android
186development environment (more
187info).

188
Integrated the Android Asset Studio, which helps you create icons for things
189like the launcher, menus, and tabs. (<a
190href="http://tools.android.com/recent/assetstudiointegration">more
191info).

192
Revamped the Logcat view and added support to display and filter logs by
193 application names as well as PIDs (<a
194 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/updatedlogcatviewer">more info).

195
Revamped the SDK Manager UI (more
196info).

197
Revamped the New Project and the New XML File wizards to have
198multiple pages. Sample projects are now copied into the workspace such that they can be modified
199and deleted without affecting the master copy
200(more info).

201
Removed the dependency on Eclipse GEF.

202

203

204
205
XML and Java editors

206

207

208
Added a new XML formatter that formats all XML files according to the
209 standard Android coding style. The formatter can also reorder
210 attributes to follow a recommended order and processes any changes made in the Layout editor.
211(more info).

212
Added the "Go to Matching" (Ctrl-Shift-P) feature, which lets you jump
213between opening and closing tags in XML files.

214
Added support for the "Select Enclosing Element" feature on Mac.

215
Added a Quickfix for extracting Strings when the caret is inside a String (see
216more).

217
Improved "smart indent", which allows automatic indentation and un-indentation
218 when pressing the Return key in XML editors (<a
219href="http://tools.android.com/recent/xmleditingimprovements">more info).

220
221

222

223
224
Layout editor

225

226

227
Added tooltip feedback for dragging and resizing operations. For
228 example, when dragging in a relative layout, the proposed
229 constraints are shown. When resizing, the new dimensions are
230 shown (more
231info).

232
Added the ability to suppress rendering fidelity warnings (<a
233href="http://tools.android.com/recent/suppressrenderwarnings">more info).

234
Added "Remove Container" visual refactoring that removes the
235 children of a container up to the top level and transfers
236 namespace and layout attributes if necessary (<a
237href="http://tools.android.com/recent/removecontainervisualrefactoring">more info).

238
Added pull-right menus to the context menu for accessing
239 properties of the parents, which is useful when the children fully
240 cover the parent and make it hard to select on their own.

241
Improved access to properties in the context menu. The most
242 frequently set attributes for each view are listed at the top of
243 the menu. The Properties menu offers access to the most
244 recently set attributes, attributes organized by their defining
245 view, and layout attributes only or all attributes alphabetically (<a
246href="http://tools.android.com/recent/layouteditorcontextmenuimprovements">more info).

327
328
Visual Refactoring:

329

330

331
"Extract Style" feature pulls out style-related attributes from your layout and extracts
332them as a new style defined in {@code styles.xml} (<a
333href="http://tools.android.com/recent/extractstylerefactoring">more info).

334
"Wrap in Container" feature lets you select a group of views then surround them
335 in a new layout (a new view group, such as a LinearLayout), and transfers namespace and layout
336 parameters to the new parent (<a
337href="http://tools.android.com/recent/newrefactoringswrapinchangelayoutchangewidget">more
338info).

339
"Change Layout" feature changes layouts from one type
340 to another, and can also flatten a layout hierarchy (<a
341href="http://tools.android.com/recent/newrefactoringswrapinchangelayoutchangewidget">more
342info).

343
"Change Widget Type" feature changes the type of the
344 selected views to a new type. Also, a new selection context menu
345 in the visual layout editor makes it easy to select siblings as
346 well as views anywhere in the layout that have the same type (<a
347href="http://tools.android.com/recent/newrefactoringswrapinchangelayoutchangewidget">more
348info).

349
"Extract as Include" feature finds identical collections of views
350 in other layouts and offers to combine them into a single layout that you can then include in
351 each layout (<a
352href="http://tools.android.com/recent/extractasincludeimprovements">more info).

353
Quick Assistant in Eclipse can be invoked
354 from the XML editor (with Ctrl-1) to apply any of the above
355 refactorings (and Extract String) to the current selection (<a
356href="http://tools.android.com/recent/refactoringquickassistant">more info).

357

358

359
360
Visual Layout Editor:

361

362

363
This is the update to the layout editor you've been waiting for! It includes (almost) all
364the goodies demonstrated at Google I/O. Watch
365the video on YouTube.

366
The palette now supports different configurations for supported widgets. That is, a single
367view is presented in various different configurations that you can drag into your layout. For
368example, there is a Text Fields palette category where you can drag an {@link
369android.widget.EditText} widget in as a password field, an e-mail field, a phone field, or other
370types of text boxes. Similarly, {@link android.widget.TextView} widgets are preconfigured
371with large, normal and small theme sizes, and {@link android.widget.LinearLayout} elements are
372preconfigured in horizontal and vertical configurations (<a
373href="http://tools.android.com/recent/multipletextfieldandlayouttypes">more info).

374
The palette supports custom views. You can pick up any custom
375 implementations of the View class you've created in your project or from included libraries and
376drag them into your layout (<a
377href="http://tools.android.com/recent/customviewsinthepalette">more info).

378
Fragments are available in the palette for placement in your layout. In the tool, you can
379choose which layout to show rendered for a given fragment tag. Go to declaration works for fragment
380classes (more info).

381
The layout editor automatically applies a "zoom to fit" for newly
382 opened files as well as on device size and orientation changes to
383 ensure that large layouts are always fully visible unless you
384 manually zoom in.

385
You can drop in an {@code <include>} element from the palette, which will pop up
386 a layout chooser. When you select the layout to include, it is added with an {@code
387<include>}. Similarly, dropping images or image buttons will pop up image
388 resource choosers (<a
389href="http://tools.android.com/recent/includetagdropsupport">more info).

390
The configuration chooser now applies the "Render Target" and
391 "Locale" settings project wide, making it trivial to check the
392 layouts for different languages or render targets without having
393 to configure these individually for each layout.

394
The layout editor is smarter about picking a default theme to
395 render a layout with, consulting factors like theme registrations
396 in the manifest, the SDK version, and other factors.

397
The layout editor is smarter about picking a default configuration to render a layout
398with, defaulting to the currently visible configuration in the previous file. It also considers the
399SDK target to determine whether to default to a tablet or phone screen size.

400
Basic focus support. The first text field dropped in a layout is assigned focus, and there
401are Request Focus and Clear Focus context menu items on text
402fields to change the focus.

403

404

405
406
XML editors:

407

408

409
Code completion has been significantly improved. It now works
410 with {@code <style>} elements, completes dimensional units,
411 sorts resource paths in values based on the attribute name, and more. There are also many fixes to
412handle text replacement (<a
413href="http://tools.android.com/recent/xmlcodecompletionimprovements">more info).

414
AAPT errors are handled better. They are now underlined for the
415 relevant range in the editor, and a new quickfix makes it trivial
416 to create missing resources.

417
Code completion for drawable, animation and color XML files (<a
418href="http://tools.android.com/recent/codecompletionfordrawablescolorsandanimationfiles">more

543
544
General notes:

545

546

547
"Go To Declaration" hyperlink support: You can jump directly from code references (such as
548
R.id.main
) to the corresponding XML declaration, or from XML attributes (such as
549
@string
) to the corresponding resource definition, or from manifest XML
550 registrations to activities and services.

551
Improvements were made to name refactoring.

552
AVDs now automatically save their state, so they can restart almost instantly. You can enable this feature when
553 creating an AVD or by editing an AVD with the AVD Manager.

554
Improvements to the Visual Layout Editor:
555

556
Support for rendering targets: You can now choose an arbitrary Android platform to
557 render the current page, regardless of the project's minimum platform. This makes it
558 easy to verify the layout and appearance of your activity on different versions of
559 the platform.
560

561
Improved support for empty and nested layouts: Dragging items over nested and
562 invisible layouts automatically enlarges and highlights these layouts, so that they
563 can receive drops.
564

565
XML formatting improvements: The editor generates cleaner XML and you can now enable
566 XML auto-formatting in the Preferences menu.

567
Improved Outline labels: The Outline tab now displays additional information about each
568 View. Textual Views display a snippet of the actual text. Views with a source
569 (such as ImageView) displays the resource name. Included Views display the name of the View.
570

571
When you right click a View in the Layout Editor,
572 the context menu now contains Edit ID... and Edit Text...
573 items. The Properties... context menus now list all of the properties and
574 provide a way to edit them
575 (Details).
576

577
The layout editor now properly handles
578
<include>

579 and
<merge>

580 tags (Details).

581
"Extract as Include" refactoring: The Layout Editor has a new refactoring that allows
582 you to select one or more views in a layout, and extract it into a separate layout
583 (Details).

584
Improved diagnostics for class loading and rendering errors: Class loading and rendering
585 error messages are more useful and provide better information about the root cause of the
586 error.

587
Improved error handling to prevent drag and reordering operations from adding children
588 into an {@link android.widget.AdapterView}.

589
Outline reordering: Reordering your views in the Outline tab is much easier
590 (Details).

591
Fix for keybinding bug where keyboard shortcuts did not work (Issues

595 13134).

596
Automatic configuration for various view types: Certain views have properties configured
597 by default. For example, the width of an {@link android.widget.EditText} object is set to
598
match_parent
when added to a vertical {@link android.widget.LinearLayout}
599 or a default image is added to an {@link android.widget.ImageButton}.

600
Previews during dragging: Dragging from the palette or dragging within the layout editor
601 now shows live previews of the dragged item.

602
Navigation improvements: In the Layout Editor, double-clicking Views jumps to the
603 corresponding XML element. In the Outline view, double-clicking opens the Properties view.

604
The editor has Honeycomb style animation preview support.

605
Improved rendering support for various Views (such as TabHosts and SlidingDrawers) in
606 Honeycomb (Issues 3162
607 and 13092).

608
Included layouts can be rendered and edited in the context of the layouts that include
609 them. From a layout using an

614 you can quickly change between context layouts, by right clicking in the editor and choosing
615 Show included in.... This feature is only available in Honeycomb.

616

617

618
This release fixes many other bugs, but the most important ones are listed below:
619

620
Fixed issue that prevented launching debug builds on productions devices when
621
debuggable=true
was not set in the Android manifest.

622
The LogCat view in DDMS properly handles UTF-8 characters.

623
The SDK Manager is more reliable on Windows
624 (Details).

625
A JUnit initialization bug that prevented you from working with JUnit tests was fixed

966
Installing the ADT Plugin

967
968
The sections below provide instructions on how to download and install
969ADT into your Eclipse environment. If you encounter problems, see the <a
970href="#troubleshooting">Troubleshooting section.

971
972
973
Preparing Your Development Computer

974
975
ADT is a plugin for the Eclipse IDE. Before you can install or use ADT,
976you must have a compatible version of Eclipse installed on your development
977computer. Check the <a
978href="requirements.html">System Requirements document for
979a list of Eclipse versions that are compatible with the Android SDK.

980
981

982
If Eclipse is already installed on your computer, make sure that it is
983a version that is compatible with ADT and the Android SDK.
984
985
If you need to install or update Eclipse, you can download it from this
986location:
987
988
<a href=
989"http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/">http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/
990

991
992
The "Eclipse Classic" version is recommended. Otherwise, a Java or RCP
993version of Eclipse is recommended.

994

995
996
Additionally, before you can configure or use ADT, you must install the
997Android SDK starter package, as described in <a
998href="installing.html#Installing">Downloading the SDK Starter Package.
999Specifically, you need to install a compatible version of the Android SDK Tools
1000and at least one development platform. To simplify ADT setup, we recommend
1001installing the Android SDK prior to installing ADT.

1002
1003
When your Eclipse and Android SDK environments are ready, continue with the
1004ADT installation as described in the steps below.

1005
1006
Downloading the ADT Plugin

1007
1008
Use the Update Manager feature of your Eclipse installation to install the latest
1009revision of ADT on your development computer.<>
1010
1011
Assuming that you have a compatible version of the Eclipse IDE installed, as
1012described in Preparing for Installation, above, follow
1013these steps to download the ADT plugin and install it in your Eclipse
1014environment.

1015
1016
1017

1018
Start Eclipse, then select Help > Install New
1019Software....

1020
Click Add, in the top-right corner.

1021
In the Add Repository dialog that appears, enter "ADT Plugin" for the Name and the
1022following URL for the Location:
1023
https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/

1024

1025
Click OK
1026
Note: If you have trouble acquiring the plugin, try using "http" in the Location URL,
1027instead of "https" (https is preferred for security reasons).

1028
In the Available Software dialog, select the checkbox next to Developer Tools and click
1029Next.

1030
In the next window, you'll see a list of the tools to be downloaded. Click
1031Next.

1032
Read and accept the license agreements, then click Finish.
1033
Note: If you get a security warning saying that the authenticity or validity of
1034the software can't be established, click OK.

1035
When the installation completes, restart Eclipse.

1036

1037
1038
Configuring the ADT Plugin

1039
1040
After you've successfully downloaded the ADT as described above, the next step
1041is to modify your ADT preferences in Eclipse to point to the Android SDK directory:

1042
1043

1044
Select Window > Preferences... to open the Preferences
1045 panel (Mac OS X: Eclipse > Preferences).

1046
Select Android from the left panel.

1047
You may see a dialog asking whether you want to send usage statistics to Google. If so,
1048make your choice and click Proceed. You cannot continue with this procedure until
1049you click Proceed.

1050
For the SDK Location in the main panel, click Browse... and
1051 locate your downloaded SDK directory.

1052
Click Apply, then OK.

1053

1054
1055
Done! If you haven't encountered any problems, then the installation is
1056complete. If you're installing the Android SDK for the first time, return to <a
1057href="{@docRoot}sdk/installing.html#InstallingADT">Installing the SDK to complete your setup.
1058

1059
1060
1061
Troubleshooting ADT Installation

1062
1063
If you are having trouble downloading the ADT plugin after following the
1064steps above, here are some suggestions:

1065
1066

1067
If Eclipse can not find the remote update site containing the ADT plugin,
1068try changing the remote site URL to use http, rather than https. That is, set
1069the Location for the remote site to:
1070
http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/

1071
If you are behind a firewall (such as a corporate firewall), make sure that
1072you have properly configured your proxy settings in Eclipse. In Eclipse,
1073you can configure proxy information from the main Eclipse menu in
1074Window (on Mac OS X, Eclipse) >
1075Preferences > General > Network
1076Connections.

1077

1078
1079
If you are still unable to use Eclipse to download the ADT plugin as a
1080remote update site, you can download the ADT zip file to your local machine and
1081manually install it:

1082
1083

1084
Download the current ADT Plugin zip file from the table below (do not unpack it).
1085
1086

1087

1088
Name

1089
Package

1090
Size

1091
MD5 Checksum

1092

1093

1094
ADT {@adtZipVersion}

1095

1096      {@adtZipDownload}
1097

1098
{@adtZipBytes} bytes

1099
{@adtZipChecksum}

1100

1101

1102

1103
1104

1105
Follow steps 1 and 2 in the default install
1106 instructions (above).

1107
In the Add Site dialog, click Archive.

1108
Browse and select the downloaded zip file.

1109
Enter a name for the local update site (e.g.,
1110 "Android Plugin") in the "Name" field.

1111
Click OK.
1112
Follow the remaining procedures as listed for
1113 default installation above,
1114 starting from step 4.

1115

1116
1117
To update your plugin once you've installed using the zip file, you will have
1118to follow these steps again instead of the default update instructions.

1119
1120
Other install errors

1121
1122
Note that there are features of ADT that require some optional
1123Eclipse components (for example, WST). If you encounter an error when
1124installing ADT, your Eclipse installion might not include these components.
1125For information about how to quickly add the necessary components to your
1126Eclipse installation, see the troubleshooting topic
1127ADT
1128Installation Error: "requires plug-in org.eclipse.wst.sse.ui".

1129
1130
For Linux users

1131
If you encounter this error when installing the ADT Plugin for Eclipse:
1132

1133An error occurred during provisioning.
1134Cannot connect to keystore.
1135JKS

1136

1137...then your development machine lacks a suitable Java VM. Installing Sun
1138Java 6 will resolve this issue and you can then reinstall the ADT
1139Plugin.

1140
1141
1142
Updating the ADT Plugin

1143
1144
From time to time, a new revision of the ADT Plugin becomes available, with
1145new features and bug fixes. Generally, when a new revision of ADT is available,
1146you should update to it as soon as convenient.

1147
1148
In some cases, a new revision of ADT will have a dependency on a specific
1149revision of the Android SDK Tools. If such dependencies exist, you will need to
1150update the SDK Tools component of the SDK after installing the new revision of
1151ADT. To update the SDK Tools component, use the Android SDK and AVD Manager, as
1152described in Adding SDK Components.

1153
1154
To learn about new features of each ADT revision and also any dependencies on
1155the SDK Tools, see the listings in the Revisions
1156section. To determine the version currently installed, open the
1157Eclipse Installed Software window using Help
1158> Software Updates and refer to the version listed for
1159"Android Development Tools".

1160
1161
Follow the steps below to check whether an update is available and, if so,
1162to install it.

1163
1164

1165
Select Help > Check for Updates.
1166
If there are no updates available, a dialog will say so and you're done.

1167
If there are updates available, select Android DDMS, Android Development Tools,
1168 and Android Hierarchy Viewer, then click Next.

1169
In the Update Details dialog, click Next.

1170
Read and accept the license agreement and then click Finish.
1171 This will download and install the latest version of Android DDMS and
1172 Android Development Tools.

1173
Restart Eclipse.

1174

1175
1176
1177
If you encounter problems during the update, remove the existing ADT plugin from Eclipse, then
1178perform a fresh installation, using the instructions for Installing the ADT
1179Plugin.
