1 To install the second extended file system management programs, 2just follow the steps: 3 41) Change directory into the top of the e2fsprogs source tree 5 62) Create a build directory and cd into it: 7 8 mkdir build; cd build 9 103) Run the configure script 11 12 ../configure 13 14 If you wish to turn on ELF shared libraries, add the option 15--enable-elf-shlibs. If you wish to build profiling libraries, add 16the option --enable-profile. 17 184) Compile the programs 19 20 make 21 225) Check to make sure the installation built correctly: 23 24 make check 25 266) Install the programs 27 28 Run `make install' 29 307) Install the include files and libraries 31 32 You can run `make install-libs' to install the include files and 33libraries. Please note that this installation is not needed for the 34programs to work. It is only needed if you expect to develop other 35programs using the libraries or if you want to compile other program 36using these libraries (like the 4.4BSD dump and restore port). 37 388) Remove any pre-formatted man pages. 39 40 Some distributions will have pre-formatted manual pages which 41will always be displayed in preference to newer man pages in /usr/man. 42If this is the case, you may need to manually remove them in order to 43see the correct manual pages. The shell script in 44install-utils/remove_preformat_manpages may be helpful in doing so. 45 469) Make sure your /etc/fstab file is correct. 47 48 Some distributions install an /etc/fstab which is missing the 49fifth and sixth field of filesystem entry, which are the dump 50frequency, and the fsck pass number, respectively. The problem with 51this is that the getmntent() library routine interprets those missing 52fields as "0", and a pass number of 0 is documented as meaning that 53fsck should not check that particular filesystem. If your entries in 54your /etc/fstab file look liks this: 55 56/dev/hda4 / ext2 defaults 57 58you should add "1 1" at the end of each line, so that they look like this: 59 60/dev/hda4 / ext2 defaults 1 1 61 62 There is a script in install-utils/convfstab (donated by 63Michael Weller) that may help you correct your /etc/fstab file. 64 65
