148

Synopsis

149

npm update [<pkg>...]
150
151aliases: up, upgrade, udpate
152

153
Description

154
This command will update all the packages listed to the latest version
155(specified by the
tag
config), respecting the semver
156constraints of both your package and its dependencies (if they also require the
157same package).

158
It will also install missing packages.

159
If the
-g
flag is specified, this command will update globally installed
160packages.

161
If no package name is specified, all packages in the specified location (global
162or local) will be updated.

163
Note that by default
npm update
will not update the semver values of direct
164dependencies in your project
package.json
, if you want to also update
165values in
package.json
you can run:
npm update --save
(or add the
166
save=true
option to a configuration file
167to make that the default behavior).

168
Example

169
For the examples below, assume that the current package is
app
and it depends
170on dependencies,
dep1
(
dep2
, .. etc.). The published versions of
dep1

171are:

172

{
173  "dist-tags": { "latest": "1.2.2" },
174  "versions": [
175    "1.2.2",
176    "1.2.1",
177    "1.2.0",
178    "1.1.2",
179    "1.1.1",
180    "1.0.0",
181    "0.4.1",
182    "0.4.0",
183    "0.2.0"
184  ]
185}
186

187
Caret Dependencies

188
If
app
's
package.json
contains:

189

"dependencies": {
190  "dep1": "^1.1.1"
191}
192

193
Then
npm update
will install
dep1@1.2.2
, because
1.2.2
is
latest
and
194
1.2.2
satisfies
^1.1.1
.

195
Tilde Dependencies

196
However, if
app
's
package.json
contains:

197

"dependencies": {
198  "dep1": "~1.1.1"
199}
200

201
In this case, running
npm update
will install
dep1@1.1.2
.  Even though the
202
latest
tag points to
1.2.2
, this version do not satisfy
~1.1.1
, which is
203equivalent to
>=1.1.1 <1.2.0
. So the highest-sorting version that satisfies
204
~1.1.1
is used, which is
1.1.2
.

205
Caret Dependencies below 1.0.0

206
Suppose
app
has a caret dependency on a version below
1.0.0
, for example:

207

"dependencies": {
208  "dep1": "^0.2.0"
209}
210

211

npm update
will install
dep1@0.2.0
, because there are no other
212versions which satisfy
^0.2.0
.

213
If the dependence were on
^0.4.0
:

214

"dependencies": {
215  "dep1": "^0.4.0"
216}
217

218
Then
npm update
will install
dep1@0.4.1
, because that is the highest-sorting
219version that satisfies
^0.4.0
(
>= 0.4.0 <0.5.0
)

220
Subdependencies

221
Suppose your app now also has a dependency on
dep2

222

{
223  "name": "my-app",
224  "dependencies": {
225      "dep1": "^1.0.0",
226      "dep2": "1.0.0"
227  }
228}
229

230
and
dep2
itself depends on this limited range of
dep1

231

{
232"name": "dep2",
233  "dependencies": {
234    "dep1": "~1.1.1"
235  }
236}
237

238
Then
npm update
will install
dep1@1.1.2
because that is the highest
239version that
dep2
allows. npm will prioritize having a single version
240of
dep1
in your tree rather than two when that single version can
241satisfy the semver requirements of multiple dependencies in your tree.
242In this case if you really did need your package to use a newer version
243you would need to use
npm install
.

244
Updating Globally-Installed Packages

245

npm update -g
will apply the
update
action to each globally installed
246package that is
outdated
-- that is, has a version that is different from
247
wanted
.

248
Note: Globally installed packages are treated as if they are installed with a
249caret semver range specified. So if you require to update to
latest
you may
250need to run
npm install -g [<pkg>...]

251
NOTE: If a package has been upgraded to a version newer than
latest
, it will
252be downgraded.
